Every room, every Dads the dog they said they didn’t want shirt night, just me and the bodies. Once I had turned off most of the lights upstairs, the last task was to go into a closet in one of the viewing rooms and set the night alarm which gave me something like 3 minutes to get out of the building. Then I walked downstairs as fast as I could slapping off all the lights behind me, past the prep room to the employee’s entrance and outside. I never got used to that part of the job. I could go into the prep room and watch the embalmers work with no problem but being alone in the dark with dead bodies always creeped me out.

I was working at a Dads the dog they said they didn’t want shirt candy store, and a couple of “kids” came to buy some of the store’s more exclusive chocolates. They demanded that I give them the store’s employee discount (turns out that they were friends of one of the girls, and she would regularly give all of her friends her employee discount, which was strictly forbidden in the Employee Handbook unless the customer worked in either the candy store’s chain or the sister nut shop’s chain.) I told them that they would either have to pay full price, present a coupon or have their friend purchase their candy. I didn’t realize that two members of mall security, my mom and brother and a District Manager were coming just as things started escalating. Suddenly, I heard a Southern-tinged voice, “Phyl Faye, would you mind mixing up some dietetic candy for your father as well as something for your brother?
